Are You Trapped in Your Golf Matrix

As a man who has devoted his whole life to the most clear headed science, to the study of matter, I can tell you as a result of my research about atoms this much: There is no matter as such. All matter originates and exists only by virtue of a force which brings the particle of an atom to vibration and holds this most minute solar system of the atom together. We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscious and intelligent mind. This mind is the matrix of all matter.
– German Physicist Max Planck

If the mind is the matrix of all matter (stuff) as Max Planck suggests, then just imagine for a moment the possibilities of that statement for you. If you could change how you represent any golf experience to yourself, then you could literally change ANY aspect of your golf performance…WOW!

Instead of creating the same level of reality over and over, (eg. slice into the trees on the 15th) you can change the direction of your intention (mental force) and create an entirely different outcome. So instead of generating the same old negative thoughts about a particular aspect of your game, you simply focus your attention on what you want SPECIFICALLY, and practice it CONSISTENTLY, and you WILL generate a new and better reality for yourself.

So the number one key to golf confidence is to focus specifically and practice consistently. This means you decide exactly what you want to achieve with your game and then rehearse the outcome you desire over and over consciously. Eventually (well, it shouldn’t take you that long) your unconscious mind will accept the command and help you to generate the results you are striving for.

We’ll continue to explore this concept in my next post.

Are You An Inverse Paranoid

“To play well you must feel tranquil and at peace. I have never been troubled by nerves in golf because I felt I had nothing to lose and everything to gain.” – Harry Vardon (6 Time Open Champion)

Harry Vardon’s quote reminds of the importance of a proper perspective if you want to play golf confidently. A paranoid golfer is someone who believes that something bad is going to happen to them. Their perspective is significantly influenced by past negative events that make them feel like they have everything to lose and nothing to gain during a round of golf. Paranoid golfer’s associate negative events to different parts of their game and practice the association over and over, making the connection stronger. After a while they simply feel like the game of golf is conspring to lead them into trouble, a form of paranoia.

Harry Vardon and other confident golfers have a mindset like that of an inverse paranoid. An inverse paranoid would be someone who actually believes that they have nothing to lose and everything to gain when they play golf. They are completely at ease because they believe that they have absolutely nothing to fear, and that it’s more than likely that they will have an exceptionally successful round of golf.

What kind of golfer are you?…Do you believe that your game of golf is for you or against you? It’s an interesting and unusual perspective, and useful if you wish to develop a belief that your game of golf is there to help you have an excellent day on the golf course.

Some final wise words fromVardon; “He who is the most composed when in difficulties and when the game is going against him, and who treats each fresh trouble as it comes along as part of the ordinary day’s work to be surmounted in the best manner possible, is the player who will most frequently come out the conquerer.”

Age Shall Not Weary The Champion Golfer

Years ago we discovered the exact point of the dead center of middle age. It occurs when you are too young to take up golf and too old to rush up to the net. – Author Unknown

Arnold Palmer turned eighty this year and Jack Nicklaus turned seventy. They rarely compete today but they competed well into their fifties and sixties. Ben Hogan remained competitive well into his fifties as well, and there are many other champion golfers who refuse to let their age slow them down.

I watched the battle between Tom Watson and Fred Couples at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai, and I couldn’t help but admire Tom Watson and his steely determination and resolve to continue to win golf championships. As many of you would know Tom Watson very nearly won the 2009 Open Championship, ultimately losing in a play-off to Stewart Cink at the seasoned age of sixty years.

When I was a young assistant golf professional Tom Watson was my hero and a model golfer to many other young aspring professional golfers. I watched his battles on the golf course at major championships some thirty years ago and under the pressure of major championship play watched him find that something extra needed to win the championship.

Today as if time stood Tom Watson won the Champions tour event by producing two magnificent birdies on the last two holes to close out Fred Couples by one shot. Watson shot seven under for the day and Couples shot eight for three round totals of twenty two and twenty one under par respectively.

Again it was as if I was watching the television in the eighties, because there was Watson finding a way to win when it mattered.

Hale Irwin who is nearly sixty five finished the same tournament in fifth place at fourteen under par. And the indomitable Gary Player at seventy four years of age shot rounds of 76, 74 and 76. Clearly staying metally and physically competitive has its benefits. When many people are thinking about retiring after working for forty years, champion golfers are still remaining highly competitive.

The following poem is one of my favourites and I hope that it inspires you to continue to find ways to “win” at whatever it is that you want to achieve in your life. Age is no barrier when it comes to achieving your goals in life. Attitude is the secret of golf champions and champions in other areas of life.

“I can do it” is the mind-set of the champion, and ”We can do it” is the mind-set of champion teams.

YOUTH by Samuel Ullman – American Business Man, Poet and Humanitarian

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than a body of twenty. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what’s next, and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young.

When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at twenty, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at eighty.

You can keep you game sharp like Tom Watson and his fellow golfers by practicing on a regular basis and spending most of your time on putting and wedge skills. Modern golf club technology will give your game a boost, but it isn’t going to develop your competitive desires and instincts. It doesn’t matter what standard of golfer you are right now, if you want to play golf competitively into your mature years, keep striving to find ways of improving.

Stretch your mind and body to places it’s never been before, and you will play golf like you’ve never played before.

A Message to a Golf Student Struggling to Find Golf Confidence

Wow, sorry to read that your golf performance was so far off the rails today.

Your question; “how does it happen?” is the eternal golfing question.

“How do you go from hitting great golf shots on the range to something almost unrecognizable on the golf course?”

To be honest James I believe the hardest thing about golf is not struggling with an inconsistent golf game.

The game of golf is by its very nature is very unpredictable, which therefore makes it very difficult to be consistent at, and for that matter confident at.

I believe the hardest thing to develop is the mental discipline required to continually believe in your ability to produce better golf scores when everything around you says otherwise.

Some call it mental toughness, and some call it “a never give up attitude,” either way, it’s an absolute requirement that YOU

BELIEVE IN YOURSELF AND PERSIST WITH YOUR ONGOING CHANGES.

Regardless of what one round or more suggests, you must stick to your changes until you come out the other side.

This is not ‘airy fairy’ stuff James, this is the edge that you’re looking for. The bottom line is mental discipline requires a day to day dedication to practicing your golf skills with precision and patience.

You WILL get better if you keep focusing on what you want from your golf game and not focusing on what you don’t want.

I can share this with you James because I have been in a similar situation, and at times I wondered what the heck I needed to do to break through, and then I discovered it…

What Were You Thinking

“You can hit a two acre fairway 10% of the time and a two inch branch 90% of the time.”

Don’t think about a shiny white golf ball right now. Mental translation…think about a shiny white golf ball right now. You’ve heard the story, the golfer (not you) is playing the fifteenth hole and he always hits his golf ball into the water, even when he tries not to.

Despite his best efforts to avoid hitting his ball there, his golf ball is attracted to the water like a powerful magnet. The one thing that he so desperately want’s to avoid, he seems to have absolutely no power over.

Why?…Well imagine for a moment with a marker in hand you were going to draw two objects on a white board. The first item is a “golf ball” and the second item is a “don’t.” Which one is easiest for you to draw? Your mind will have a great deal of difficulty trying to imagine what a “don’t” looks like. Whereas imagining and then drawing a golf ball is relatively easy in comparison.

Here’s another example, don’t think about Tiger Woods. It’s difficult isn’t it? You know what Tiger Woods looks like so trying not think about what Tiger looks like is difficult for your mind to achieve.

Your mind thinks in positives not negatives. In other words it’s programmed to focus on what you want not what you don’t want. So when I say don’t think about an orange, it simply focuses on an orange.

So how does this work for you and your golf shots? The next time you go out to play golf focus on exactly what you want from each and every golf stroke you make. Make sure your golf shot is achievable and realistic for your skill level. Before you play your stroke imagine with as much detail as you can how the particular shot you are about to hit will behave. Picture the flight of the ball and exactly where you want it to go.

Play the “where to go” game not the “where not to go” game. You will dramatically improve your golf confidence and consequently your performances by developing your “where to go” skills. Playing golf will definately become a more positive experience for you, because you will be removing the mental roadblocks that get in the way of you playing to your potential.

Give it a try and let me know how you go.

Is There a Perfect Golf Swing Technique

Golf, it’s for sure one of the most difficult game to play, and there are more people trying to peddle quick fixes for your problems than Carter’s got liver pills. If you think I’m exagerating go to the golf channel for a little while and see how many advertisements you find for the next best training aid. Some of these training aids will work, I can’t dispute that. However I’ve always wondered if we need to have this perfect swing in order to enjoy the game and have a half decent score.

Golf Swing Truths: While we all want to critique everyone elses golf swing, or at least I do, the truth is all the little things we talk about in not lifting the head, rotating our hips, keeping our arms straight are all to ensure just one thing happens. When our golf club goes through the down swing to make impact with the ball, that the club face is perfectly square so that the golf ball goes straight.

Now I’m not saying that you won’t need to pay close attention to holding your head down, feet aligned and all of the other finer points of the golf swing. However, what I am saying is that you don’t always need a perfect swing to play a half way decent round of golf. So with that being said what does it take to have a good swing?

Facts about the Swing: Okay, so it is not so much facts plural as it is a fact. While your friends on the course will be quick to advise you that you raised your head or you’re not lined up correctly, there is really only one key thing that must happen to make sure that the ball goes straight. You must have the face of the club square to the golf ball at the moment of impact.

Sure, all those other points your buds constantly bug you about are important but they are all related to that one major point. We must be sure the club face is connecting with the ball “square on” to make sure it goes straight, and as long as possible. So if all of those points we scrutinize over about the golf swing aren’t as important as we thought, what does it take to develop a good swing?

The Bare Essentials to make it go Straight: There are five points I am going to list that I think are the lazy way to hitting the ball straight.

Knees: This might not seem all that important but when you’re addressing the ball you should have your knees slightly bent. Not so much that your knees are interfering with your swing, but ever so slightly to give you perfect balance.

Back: I see a lot of golfers, when I’m out on the course, hunched over the ball and trying to swing away at it with no success. With your knees being slightly bent, as mentioned in the previous point, connect at the hips and hold your back straight. The pivot point should be your hips and you should maintain approximately the same height through your back swing, and down swing until you’ve completed your follow through.

Arms: This is another difficult one. Most golfers want to swing the club like a base ball bat or a hockey stick, depending on the other sports we play. Golf is a game of finesse, no powering through the ball. As you take your club up in the back swing try to think about keeping your front arm (left for right handed golfers) straight. This will help keep the club head on the same plane as it comes through the down swing to impact.

Head: We already touched on this, but keeping your eye on the ball is most important. One point to note here is that you shouldn’t have your head turned down so much that your face is parallel to the ground. Tilt the head forwards and look downwards at the ball, but keep your chin up enough so that your arms and shoulders can come through as you swing.

Hips: This is where you’re going to generate the power for your swing. You don’t want to lean forward during the swing, you can to try and maintain no movement below the waist until you’re making contact with the ball. At this point you should make a twisting motion at the hips so that your trailing hip turns through the swing and once completed your belt buckle is pointing at your target.

So, these are the finer points we’ll say about helping to achieve a repeatable golf swing. You are not going to be swinging the club like Tiger anytime soon, but as this article has tried to get across do you really have to? As you improve your swing, you’ll enjoy the game more.
